In the past, Prophets and the people used to fast. Jesus (P*) fasted for forty days (Matthew 4:2). Fasting is obligatory for the Muslims during the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the lunar year. They refrain from all food, drink and sex from dawn to sunset. They refrain from these daily necessities solely to obey God. Fasting brings people closer to God. This teaches them self control, discipline and patience. A deep feeling for those who are less fortunate develops. By sharing the hunger pain, they realize the need to share their fortune with the less fortunate. It develops a keen sense of brotherhood among them. Fasting also cleanses one`s soul.
